NOWHERE ON EARTH LIKE IT

I once rode my bicycle the length of Utah, on assignment for the Deseret News. The plan was to follow Highway 89 from Arizona to Idaho, writing stories along the way. I began by dipping my tire in Lake Powell and ended by dipping it in Bear Lake. I saw Butch Cassidy’s house in Circleville; the town of Orderville where Mormons once tried to live the law of consecration; ate at Mom’s Cafe in Salina; saw a demolition derby in Fairview; rode past “Y” Mountain; the arena where the Jazz play; the Capitol dome; dropped into Cache Valley like it was the Alps. In a week, at 15 miles an hour. I saw the beautiful diversity of Utah. There is nowhere on Earth like it.
